Eden Camp – for kids who love history

Eden Camp is a modern history museum located near Malton in North Yorkshire. Through exploring this former prisoner of war camp in the form of 22 huts, the story of World War II unfolds in an incredibly immersive way. I think it is suitable for all ages but there are some areas that might upset or scare younger children. These are all signposted so you know which ones to check out before your little ones!

Opening Times and Prices:

Booking online in advance saves you money, and children under 5 go free.

It is open daily apart from the Winter months, where it closes from around November to early March.

Things to do at Eden Camp

1. Learn

The 22 huts take you on a journey through U-Boats, the blitz, POW camps and much more, right though to more modern times. There are streets to walk through, photos and accounts of real people to take in, and extremely immersive experiences.

2. Play and Dine

Two outdoor play areas provide lots of fun: one for under 5s, and one for under 12s. The cafe provides some wonderful food, from stew in giant yorkshire puddings to sandwiches, as well as an array of hot and cold drinks. I can personally reccomend the chicken pie!

3. Remember

There are several memorials around the site, including a beautiful garden, with dedications to the men, women and animals that fought in modern history conflicts. Some of the huts also serve as powerful reminders of what was endured.

Things to do nearby

1. Journey on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Catch a steam or diesel train from the market town of Pickering to the bustling coast of Whitby, or stop at any of the quaint villages on the route including Goathland (site of Hogsmede) and Grosmont. There are so many ways to enjoy a day out hopping on and off these wonderful heritage trains.

2. Scampston Hall and Walled Gardens

There is lots to explore here, from the beautifully designed walled garden to the extensive parkland, hundreds of years old trees, river and lots of little historical buildings, and that’s all before you even enter the house! You could spend a morning or afternoon well here.
